My openSUSE 12 Journal - 3: Lotus Notes 8.5.3
For starters, Lotus Notes 8.5.3 only managed to render about half of its interface. For example, I could see my inbox but email preview pane is blank. Integrated SameTime worked but workspaces and replication tabs were blank too. I suspect it could be some incompatibility or confusion with the GTK libs and I was right... Google is my friend and I discovered a brilliant soul who had the same challenge, created a bug report against openSUSE and even created a workaround/fix.
[Update on 27 Nov 2011]: Oops, it occurred to me that Lotus Notes 8.5.3 is actually 32-bit running on 64-bit openSUSE 12.1. That means the RPM created by Stefan Lijewski should have worked. I cannot recall why I came to the previous conclusion. I have just tried the 32-bit RPM and it worked for me. Therefore, I am correcting my entry below.
The easy way is to use a 1-click install via Stefan Lijewski's online repository.
The easy but manual way is to download the RPM before you manually execute a zypper in lotus-notes-gnome3-1-1.1.i586.rpm
In both cases, you will need to verify that your Lotus Notes launch icon has been updated to use the new notes-wrapper script instead of the original notes script in /opt/ibm/lotus/notes/ directory.
Finally, the hard way (if you're so inclined to experience compiling your own code) is the original method I used below.
1. Download the workaround fix from https://github.com/sgh/lotus-notes_gtk2.23.3/downloads
2. Un-tar the fix, tar zxvf sgh-lotus-notes_gtk2.23.3-2028e8e.tar.gz
3. You will need to install additional packages before you can compile the fix. As root, zypper in make gcc gtk2-devel glibc-devel-32bit gcc-32bit
4. In the sgh-lotus-notes_gtk2.23.3-2028e8e subdirectory, compile the fix with make
5. If make completed with success, you should have a new file libnotesgtkfix.so in the directory. Copy it and notes-wrapper to installed Lotus Notes directory /opt/ibm/lotus/notes/.
6. Last and final step, edit your Lotus Notes icons (kmenuedit if using KDE4) and change the default launch script to execute notes-wrapper instead.
That's it. Lotus Notes 8.5.3 should function normally... and its all good for the last 3 days for me.
I hear this would not be a challenge with the newer Lotus Notes 8.5.4 (yet to be officially released). We shall see when we get there. :)

openSUSE 12.1 gets positive review on LAS
Most interesting (the best) comment on that YouTube page was from Jos Poortvliet (our openSUSE Community Manager), "VERY nice review guys! Fun to see how opinions on openSUSE have changed in the last year - from 'meh, yeah, is that distro still alive?' to the awesomeness now :D
As with most things in life, its all about perception and goodwill. openSUSE 12.1 is polished and enjoyable but a number of the great features mentioned, including SUSE Studio and openSUSE Build Service, have been around for a while... anyway, I'm just happy & enjoying the goodwill towards openSUSE. :)

Sin embargo, hay algo que Mountain View tiene y los demas no. El Googleplex. Vale mucho la pena ir, si es que ustedes tienen la oportunidad de caer en esta latitud. Primero, tenemos la bienvenida en el atardecer dominical pre-thanksgiving:

Una de las primeras cosas que se ven entrando es un ejemplo de un servidor de Google de hace años, de ahi cuando andaban empezando. De hecho, los servers traen Pentium II. ¿Se lo imaginan hoy en día? Aqui la foto:
Noten el detalle de que no es el típico servidor. En realidad, es un servidor que no tiene "Soportes" para las motherboards clásicos. Es decir, tienen una lamina de metal que "sostiene" la motherboard y entre la mobo y el metal, existe una placa de ... corcho. Si, simple corcho, del que usan para tapar las botellas de vino. Ese era el avanzado secreto de Google en esos tiempos: poder meter el doble de servidores en el mismo espacio de racks.
Para algunas cosas, Google funciona más como una meritocracia universitaria que cómo una compañia. De hecho, hacen muchos eventos culturales, tecnicos, etc. Esta es una de las salas donde se dan conferencias, cursos o simples pláticas a los equipos de trabajo.
Otra cuestión muy interesante de Google es la importancia que le da a que la gente haga aunque sea un poco de ejercicio, para mejorar la vida de todos. Para ello, pone bicicletas gratis, en las cuales uno se puede mover muy bien a través del campus (que insisto, es más un campus universitario por el tamaño y el conocimiento que concentra).

LSWC’11 Zaragoza, España
Una conferencia con 600 participantes y 100 empresas de software libre…algo muy interesante y para mi la primera conferencia fuera de mi país natal…
Yo vivo y estudio en Madrid pero pensé que sería una buena idea participar en LSWC’11…vamos a ver que pasó en esta conferencia y qué charlas ví.
Día 1 (9 Noviembre)
Me desperté muy temprano para coger el autobús y para ir al edificio del Ayutamiento de Zarogoza. Llegué a las 8.00 para las “Acreditaciones” por eso tuve tiempo para disfrutar de un café en la “Cafeteria el Seminario” .A las 9.00 entré en el Ayuntamiento de Zaragoza, para acreditarme. La verdad es que no fue dificil encontrar el cartel de la conferencia y “las Acreditaciones“. ya que encima de las Acreditaciones había 3 carteles de la conferencia ([1] , [2] , [3] ).A las 10.00 empezó el “Acto inaugural“. En aquello habló Juan Alberto Belloca (Alcade de Zaragoza) y presentó la adopción del Software Libre en Aragón los últimos años. Después del Acto inaugural, vi una charla muy interesante “ Firma e identidad digital con Sinadura Suite” . Este Suite es uno producto de software libre de la empresa Zylk (construido en Java) , tiene que ver con la firma e identidad electronica de DNI. A las 11.30 tenia lugar el primer descanso ( Coffee Break). Despues a las 12.00 vi la charla de “Desarrollo web con express.js (node.js + MVC)” . Express.js ofrece una manera muy inteligente para programar en Javascript. Esta conferencia me gustó mucho porque no era solo una conferencia de caracter commercial , sino también porque había charlas de interesante general, como la charla sobre “Las redes sociales en la web 2.0” (Ana Frede).
Después de esta interesante charla, tuvo lugar el descanso de la comida (a mediodía), entré en otra presentación que en mi opinión era tan importante como las otras “Migración de Google Apps a Zimbra OSE en Consorci Lleidatá” .En mi opinión en este tiempo faltan aplicaciones que puedan sustituir a Google Apps. A las 17:00 empezó en el Salón Actos , una charla de interés legal , “ Patentes de Software : el imperio contracta ” (de Alberto Barrionuevo). Pero creo que este téma no es solo de interés legal, la gente de informatica tiene la obligacion conocer que pasa con los patentes de software. Despues de esta charla , Alberto Barrionuevo , dió una charla más , pero de interés commercial “OpenERP Plus : la más completa gestión empresial libre” , una implementación del OpenERP mas commercial que la empresa OPENTIA ha implementado los ultimos años. Asi pasó el primer dia en la conferencia.

Dia 2 (10 de Noviembre)
El segundo dia era un poco differente al primero. A las 10.30 la charla más importante en mi opinion empezó en el Aula 3. Las certificaciones es algo en lo que mucha gente está interesada en obtener, por eso “Que es la Certificacion LPI” fue una charla que dió a todos mucha informacion. Henry Chalup Dergam , el Director Manager de LPI en España , presentó la certificación , y todas las información asociada. Durante la presentacion , en la Aula 3 , vi algo que me alegró. En el Ayutamiento de Zaragoza se utiliza una distribucion basada en openSUSE 11.2 , que se llama AZLinux. La ultima presentacion que vi era de AZLInux. Despues del Coffee Break , a las 12.00 empeze el Merengue. El tema de la presentacion era ” Merengue : CMS basado en Django “. Merengue es un CMS basado en Django , la verdad es que conozco un poco de Django , pero es más facil utilizar y programar con Merengue que con Django. La ultima charla que vi era “AZLinux. Caraterísticas funcionales ” . AZLinux está basado en openSUSE 11.2 , el Ayutamiento ahora ya utiliza software libre en todos los ordenadores y me gusto mucho que fuese una politica del Gobierno de Aragon , el uso del software libre en el sector público. Por eso AZLinux utliza el Migasfree Package Manager , un package manager muy útil y muy fácil. En el Ayutamiento de Zaragoza se ha implementado una migración desde software propietario a software libre.

Al final , LSWC’11 me gustó. Conoci a mucha gente que esta aficionado en Software Libre .No sólo empresarios sino también personas como yo, muy simples.Como ha dicho Francisco Javier Solans Benedi (Presidente de Cesla )en el [ vid1 ] (13:00), “De hecho Software Libre es un axioma ,que viene para establecerse“, asi que en muchas communidades autonomas de España se utilizan software libre. Seguramente participe en otras conferencias y eventos como este, aquí en España.

Ένα συνέδριο με 600 συμμετέχοντες και 100 επιχειρήσεις ανοιχτού λογισμικού…κάτι πολύ ενδιαφέρον,για μένα το πρώτο συνέδριο στο εξωτερικό . Σπουδάζω και μένω στην Μαδρίτη παρόλα ταύτα σκέφτηκα πως θα ήτανε μία πολύ ωραία ιδέα η συμμετοχή στο συνέδριο…πάμε να δούμε όμως τι έλαβε μέρος στο συνέδριο , ποιες παρουσιάσεις παρακολούθησα…
Ημέρα 1η (9 Νοεμβρίου)
Ξύπνησα πολύ νωρίς για να πάρω το λεωφορείο έτσι ώστε να πάω στο κτήριο του Ayutamiento de Zarogoza. Έφτασα στις 8 το πρωί , αλλά οι “Διαπιστεύσεις” ξεκινούσαν στις 9 , οπότε απόλαυσα τον πρωινό μου καφέ στην Cafeteria el Seminario. Στις 9 λοιπόν μπήκα στο κτήριο , για περάσω την διαδικάσια των διαπιστεύσεων. Η αλήθεια είναι πως δεν ήτανε δύσκολο να βρείς την “αφίσα” του συνεδρείου αλλά και το πού γινότανε οι “Διαπιστεύσεις”. Απέναντι απο τον χώρο τον διαπιστέυσεων υπήρχανε 3 αφίσες ([1] , [2] , [3] ). Στις 10 λοιπόν ξεκίνησε το “Καλωσόρισμα “ . Σε αυτό μίλησε ο Juan Alberto Belloca (Δήμαρχος της Σαραγόσας ) και παρουσίασε την αποδοχή της χρήσης του ανοιχτού λογισμικού στην επαρχεία της Aragon τα τελευταία χρόνια. Μετά το καλωσόρισμα , παρακολούθησα μια πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα παρουσίαση “Ψηφιακή υπογραφή και ηλεκτρονική ταυτότητα με την χρήση της Sinadura Suite” . Αυτή η σουίτα είναι ένα προιον ανοιχτού λογισμικού της εταιρίας Zylk (κατασκευασμένο σε Java) , και έχει σχέση με την ψηφιακή υπογραφή και ηλεκτρονική ταυτότητα που χρησιμοπείται στα Ισπανικά Δελτία Ταυτότητας (DNI). Στις 11.30 υπήρξε μια μικρή διακοπή και ξεκίνησε το “δίαλειμμα για καφέ” . Έτσι στις 12.00 ακολούθησε η επόμενη παρουσίαση “Web programming με το express.js (node.js + MVC) “ , το express.js προσφέρει ένα πολύ έξυπνο και αποτελεσματικό τρόπο για προγραμματισμό σε Javascript. Αυτό το συνέδριο μου άρεσε πολύ γιατί δεν υπήρχανε παρουσιάσεις εμπορικού χαρακτήρα , αλλά παρουσιάσεις γενικότερου ενδιαφέροντος, όπως η παρουσίαση “Τα κοινωνικά δίκτυα στο Web 2.0” , της Ana Frede. Μετά απο αυτήν την ενδιαφέρουσα παρουσίαση , ακολούθησε το μεσημεριανό δίαλειμμα. Στη συνέχεια ακολούθησε μια ενδιαφέρουσα όσο και οι άλλες παρουσίαση “Μεταφορά απο το Google Apps στο Zimbra OSE (Consorci Lleidata) “ . Κατα την γνώμη μου απουσιάζουνε εφαρμογές (ή πλατφόρμες) οι οποίες μπορούν να αντικαταστήσουνε το Google Apps. Στις 17.00 , στο Salon Actos , έλαβε μέρος μία παρουσίαση νομικού ενδιαφέροντος, “Πατέντες λογισμικού : Η αυτοκρατορία αντεπιτίθεται “ , απο τον Alberto Barrionuevo. Πιστεύω πως αυτό το θέμα δεν είναι μόνο νομικού ενδιαφέροντος , αλλά και ο κόσμος της πληροφορικής έχει την υποχρεώση να γνωρίζει το τί συμβαίνει με τις πατέντες λογισμικού. Ο Alberto Barrionuevo παρουσίασε επίσης , κάτι πιο εμπορικό , “OpenERP Plus : Η πιο ολοκληρωμένη υλοποίηση διοίκησης επιχειρήσεων “ ,μια πιο εμπορική υλοποίηση του OpenERP που η εταιρία OPENTIA έχει υλοποιήσει τα τελευταία χρόνια. Έτσι λοιπόν πέρασε η πρώτη μέρα στο συνέδριο.

Ημέρα 2η (10 Νοεμβρίου)
Η δεύτερη μέρα ήταν λίγο διαφορετική απο την πρώτη. Στις 10.30 η πιο σημαντική , κατ’εμε , παρουσίαση ξεκίνησε στην Aula 3. Οι πιστοποιήσεις είναι κάτι το οποίο πολύς κόσμος θέλει να αποκτήσει , γιαυτο “Τι είναι η πιστοποίηση LPI “ η οποία έδωσε σε όλους τις απαραίτητες πληροφορίες. Ο Henry Chalup Dergam , General Director για το LPI στην Ισπανία παρουσίασε την πιστοποίηση και όλες τις απαραίτητες πληροφορίες. Κατα την δίαρκεια της παρουσίασης έιδα κάτι το οποίο με χαροποίησε. Στο Ayutamiento de Zaragoza χρησιμοποιούνε μία διανομή Linux η οποία βασίζεται στο openSUSE 11.2 και ονομάζεται “AZLinux” .Η τελευταία παρουσιάση που είδα ήτανε αυτή για το “ AZLinux “ . Μετά το δίαλειμμα για καφέ , στις 12.00 ξεκίνησε η παρουσίαση του Merengue. Το θέμα της παρουσιάσης ήτανε “Merengue : CMS βασισμένο στο Django“ , η αλήθεια είναι πώς γνώριζω πολύ λίγο το Django ,αλλά μου φάνηκε ευκολότερο στην χρήση απο το Django. Η τελευταία λοιπόν παρουσίαση ήτανε η “AZLinux. Λειτουργικά χαρακτηριστικά” . To AZLinux βασίζεται στο openSUSE Linux 11.2 , το Ayutamiento πλέον χρησιμοποιεί ανοιχτό λογισμικό σε όλους τους υπολογιστές και μου άρεσε αρκετά η πολιτική που ακολουθεί η Κυβέρνηση της Αραγονίας για την χρήση του ανοιχτού λογισμικού στο δημόσιο τομέα. Έτσι λοιπόν το AZLinux χρησιμοποιεί τον διαχειριστή πακέτων Migasfree, ένας πολύ απλός και συνάμα πολυ χρήσιμος διαχειριστής πακέτων. Στο Ayutamiento της Σαραγόσας έχουνε υλοποιήσει με επιτυχία λοιπόν την μεταφορά απο τεχνολογίες κλειστού λογισμικού σε αντίστοιχες ανοιχτού λογισμικού.

Εν κατακλείδι , το LSWC’11 μου άρεσε πολύ. Γνώρισα πολύ κόσμο που ενασχολείται με το Ανοιχτό Λογισμικό. Ανθρώπους των επιχειρήσεων αλλά και ανθρώπους απλούς σάν εμένα. Όπως είπε ο Francisco Javier Solans Benedi (Πρόεδρος του Cesla ) στο [ vid1 ] (13:00), “De hecho Software Libre es un axioma ,que viene para establecerse“, δηλαδή “ Όντως το ανοιχτό λογισμικό είναι ένα αξίωμα και έρχεται να καθιερωθεί “, έτσι λοιπόν πολλές αυτόνομες κοινότηες στην Ισπανία χρησιμοποιούνε ανοιχτό λογισμικό. Σίγουρα θα συμμετάσχω και σε άλλα συνέδρεια και εκδηλώσεις εδώ στην Ισπανία.

A conference with 600 participants and 100 open-source companies...something very interesting and for me the first conference outside of my country...
I leave and study in Madrid but i thought it would be a good idea taking part in the LSWC'11..let's see what happened in the conference and which presentation i saw...
I woke up very early so as to take the bus and go to "Ayutamiento de Zarogoza's building". I arrived about 8 o'clock for the "Accreditations" so i had free time to enjoy a coffee in "Cafeteria el Seminario" . At 9 o'clock i got into Ayuntamiento de Zaragoza, so as to be accredited . The truth is that it wasn't difficult to find the conference cartel (poster) and the "Accreditations place" because nearby there were 3 conference posters. ([1] , [2] , [3] ). About 10 o'clock took part the "Conference Opening". During the Opening speech , Juan Alberto Belloca (Alcade de Zaragoza) presented the adoption and use of FLOSS in Aragon the last years. Afterwards , an interesting presentation took place "Firm and digital identity with Sinadura Suite" . This suite it's a free software product (builed in Java) offered by Zylk, has to do with the firm and digital identity in Spain (DNI). At 11.30 was the right moment for the (Coffee Break). After the Coffee Break another presantation took place , "Web development using express.js (node.js + MVC)" . Express.js offers a very clever way to programm in Javascript. I really enjoyed this conference because there have been presentations not only of commercial interest although presentations of general interest like "The social networks in web 2.0" (Ana Frede). After this interesting presentation , as usually the lunch time begun. I attended another presentation,which in my opinion was important enough,such as the others "Migrasion from Google Apps to Zimbra OSE (Consorci Lleidatá)" . I believe that right now,there is a lack of applications that could replace Google Apps. At 17.00 in Salon Actos,started another speach of legal interest "Software patents : the empire strikes back" (by Alberto Barrionuevo). Though,I insist that this subject is not only of legal interest,as the informatics people have to be aware of what is up with software patents. After this speech, Alberto Barrionuevo, gave another one, of commercial interest "OpenERP Plus : the most complete implementation of free empresial management " ,over a version of OpenErp,more commercialized,that OPENTIA gave out in the last years. This was how the first day in the conference passed.

The second day was slightly different from the first one. at 10.30 the most important speech for me,started in Aula 3. Certifications is something many people want to obtain,that's why "Que es la Certificacion LPI" gave us all, all the needed information. Henry Chalup Dergam , the Director Manager of LPI in Spain , presented the certification and all the connected information. During the presentation in aula 3, I saw smth that made me happy. in the city hall of zaragoza,they use a distribution, based upon openSUSE 11.2, named AZLinux. The last presentation I attended was in AZLinux. After the Coffe Break, at 12.00, I started the Merengue. The subject of the presentation was "Merengue : CMS based on Django" .Merengue is a CMS based on Django, and despite the fact that I don't know much of Django, it seemed easier to use and program with Merengue than with Django. The last speech I attended was "AZLinux. Functional Characteristics" " . AZLinux is based on openSUSE 11.2. The Ayutamiento de Zaragoza now uses free software in all its computers and I loved the fact that it was a policy of the Aragon Government, this use of free software in the public sector.For this, AZLinux uses the Migasfree Package Manager, a package manager very useful and easy-to-use.In the Ayutamiento de Zaragoza they inserted a migration from propietary software into free software.

Finally,LSWC'11 was a conference I liked. I met many people passionate with FreeSoftware.Not only company members but also persons like me,simple individuals.As Francisco Javier Solans Benedi (President of Cesla) in [ vid1 ] (13:00), "It's a fact that Free Software is an axioma,that came to stay", that's why many autonomous communities in Spain use FreeSoftware.
